Why over what. It's not so much what you do but why you do it. Everybody wants to do good, everybody wants to leave their mark, everybody wants to change the world in their own way. But the most important question to ask oneself is not what I want to do about it but why I feel the need to do something in the first place.

They always say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. In my opinion, that is because most people don’t ask themselves why often enough. Doing good is difficult. The world does not seem to want your good. The world only wants your body and your consent. But why? So many times we are told to sit down shut up and listen to what we’re taught. Why? So often these answers are not forthcoming. Shame, guilt, fear and many other maladaptive feelings can cloud our judgement and allow us to believe we are doing something noble or necessary when in reality we are simply feeding our ego.

So the next time you feel inclined to do something, ask yourself why. The next time you feel a sensation in your body, really ask yourself why. And the answer is generally not the first, second or even third thing that pops in your head. Give yourself time and grace to figure yourself out. To be able to identify one’s motivations and to be able to distinguish between self and ego. Many of us are so ego based that we aren’t even aware of it, far less an alternative. So, before your next choice, your next decision, your next action, I implore you to ask. Why?
