Identity politics is a lot like a highway. Traffic is a problem. Universally. We can all agree on that. However, nobody can agree on the solution. The easiest (and most short sighted) solution is generally to add another lane. Let's check in with Texas to see how that's doing.
Okay obviously highways are stupid the expansion plans are stupid but identity politics are good, right? Encouraging people to express themselves and being inclusive. And yes, these are obviously good things, but I fear the root issue is that we're building these new ideas on a fundamentally fractured foundation. This is because there's no connection between these new identities that spring up. The LGBTQIA+ community is a perfect example. The group continues to appear to expand but all it's really doing is subdividing an already miniscule minority of people into arbitrary identities that just create more problems than they're worth in the long run. Then you end up with the solopoly non binary cis hijabi amputee. How many more boxes do we need to add before we realize it's not making a difference?
John Stewart having the light sucked out of his eyes by Kamala Harris’ sheer incompetence as a politician has been making the rounds on the Internet this week (https://x.com/kenklippenstein/status/1984050242501931441) And to be clear, this isn't an attack on woke or Democrats (definitely fuck the DNC but I digress). We appear to share many of the same values in human dignity and the right to express oneself and what not. But slapping a new coat of paint on an old car don't fix the engine. And America refuses to pop the hood.
What we need is fundamental ideological reform. Which is going to be challenging and confusing and uncertain. But the longer we wait to get started the harder the shift will be. One of my favourite quotes is from the big short. It says “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” And I don't know what the future holds or how humanity will self actualize. What I do know is that whatever the fuck is happening right now isn't working for anybody. So let's talk about it. And if you don't wanna talk that's cool too. Imma
