Learning is crystalized in the testing phase. When one is able to apply the lessons learned in real circumstances. To experiment with different stimulus and outcome. Without this crucial step any lesson is lost because the context in which to apply it is missing and thus the brain deems it irrelevant. Why would you walk around with a hammer in a world with no nails?

If you want to remember something, make it matter to you. Use it. Apply it. Look for evidence of it in your daily life. Most times once you pay enough attention, you will see the connective threads. We're not really as good at abstract thinking as we think we are. Things need to be tangible, concrete and interactive. We are an engineered environmental experiencial learners. Not conceptual crunches.

So the next time you find something hard to learn or remember ask yourself why it matters to you. Look for ways that you can apply what you learn and look for ways you can make the knowledge your own.
